“Not particularly,” Natalie said without thinking. When all eyes turned to stare, she said, “Never mind. Forget I said that. Dell loves Regina. He can be bossy if he wants to.”

“Right,” Regina laughed. “As long as I don’t have to pay any attention.”

“But you will listen to us,” Audra said, coming out from behind her desk. “Those shoes are not at all sensible for a pregnant woman.”

Regina stretched her back. “Believe me, I figured that out on the subway.”

“Dell let you take the subway?”

“Shh. Dell does not know everything.”

They were all still exclaiming over the baby-to-be and had begun to plan a future baby shower when a burly man in a green uniform entered the room.

“One of you ladies Natalie Thompson?”

“Oh, Lord,” Audra whispered. “What has Rose done now?”

Natalie shot her a quelling look and then said to the man, “I’m Natalie.”

He extended an invoice. “All set up just the way you ordered.”

Slowly, Natalie accepted the document. “I didn’t order anything.”

“Well, somebody did.”

And she knew who. “Take it back.”

She pushed the invoice toward him, but the workman stepped back, both hands raised. “Lady, me and the fellas spent three hours installing that oven in your itty-bitty kitchen. There is no way in Hades—pardon my French—that we are taking that thing out.”

Before she could say another word, he turned on his boot heel and left.

“This is impossible.” Dumbstruck, she stared down at the sheet of paper declaring her the owner of the baker’s oven she’d returned just this morning. “They can’t go into my house and install an oven without my permission. I’m calling the police.”

“Oh, come on, Natalie. Get real.” Julie slammed a desk drawer with more than a little force. “The man is trying to help you.”

“You need that oven, girlfriend.” Callie tapped her with a calla lily. “The last cake samples were a little dry.”

Natalie gasped. Her cakes were her livelihood. If the old oven let her down, what would she do?

With a sinking feeling, she knew the answer. She’d accept the new oven for the sake of her children. But she would also let Cooper know exactly what she thought about his high-handed attitude.
